CoVRage: Millimeter-Wave Beamforming for Mobile Interactive Virtual Reality

Contemporary Virtual Reality (VR) setups often include an external source delivering content to a Head-Mounted Display (HMD). “Cutting the wire” in such and going truly wireless will require network capable of enormous amounts video data at extremely low latency. The massive bandwidth higher frequencies, as millimeter-wave (mmWave) band, can meet these requirements. Due high attenuation path loss mmWave beamforming is essential. In VR, where antenna integrated into HMD, any head rotation also changes antenna’s orientation. As such, must adapt, real-time, user’s rotations. An HMD’s built-in sensors providing accurate orientation estimates may facilitate rapid beamforming. this work, we present coVRage, receive-side solution tailored for VR HMDs. Using prediction on modern HMDs, algorithm how Angle Arrival (AoA) HMD change near future, covers AoA trajectory with dynamically shaped oblong beam, synthesized using sub-arrays. We show that cover trajectories consistently gain, even light temporally or spatially inaccurate orientational data.
